Mentioned in documents from 1269 onwards, the church of Saint-Pierre de Cavanac is a Romanesque building with a single nave, probably built in the 12th century and listed as a Historic Monument in 1948. The current sacristy is a chapel added in the 15th century. The original building had a Romanesque porch, two capitals of which have been incorporated into the new bell tower. A number of restorations were carried out in the 19th century (due to the site’s poor foundations which caused the ground to settle and the vaults to move). Cavanac church can only be visited from the outside, where you can admire the corbels depicting human or animal heads which crown the cornice of the apse and perfectly illustrate the symbolism of the Middle Ages. These include a bear, a wolf and female faces sticking out their tongues...
