CHAPELLE SAINT-JEAN

Founded in around 780, the monastery of Saint-Jean was the origin of the future Abbey of Caunes. The church of Saint-Jean, built two or three centuries later, is a reminder of its location. The old part of the church is made up of the apse, the walls of the nave, the north chapel and its transverse barrel vault. In the 19th century, the door was moved and the central door in the nave was blocked up, a false vault and a sacristy were built and the floor was raised. The frescoes in the choir (in poor condition) appear to date from the 1659 restoration, as do the red marble altars. The altar on the right has 5 crosses of St Andrew and a font, which is also in black marble. A beautiful Romanesque frieze, although damaged, was found hidden inside. A conservation association was set up in 2015 and this organises concerts and events in aid of its restoration. Opened, and tours given, on request
