Famous for its red marble, the Roy marble quarry is a place steeped in history. Quarried in Roman times, the marble extracted from this quarry was used extensively during the reign of Louis XIV to decorate wealthy residences. It was from here that the marble for the Trianon in Versailles, the Marly, the Opéra Garnier and the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel in Paris was quarried.
The Roy quarry is freely accessible via the Route des Carrières, 4 km from Caunes. Continue straight on to car park P1, and the quarry is a 5-minute walk from the car park.
A 6 km walk from the village following the ‘La carrière du Roy’ yellow markers with 3 squares on top
The ‘Les Marbrieres’ association offers guided walks
